The Best 10 Day Itinerary around Slovenia

There is much to do in Slovenia all year around. Here is an idea of your 10-day trip to Slovenia visiting all of the major attractions starting with famous lake Bled.

DAY 1: Bled Lake

You will start your trip in a small town Bled, famous for its lake with an island. Make sure to try Bled Cream Cake, the traditional creamy desert. What to do around Bled Lake? You can climb one of the two viewpoints. The first one is Osojnica and the second one is a Bled Castle. If you are visiting in the summer you can swim in Bled Lake. You should also go on an island by traditional Pletna boat where you can ring a wish bell in the church. Spend the night near Bled Lake.

DAY 2: Bohinj, Savica Waterfall and Vintgar Gorge

There are many amazing places near Bled and why not to use another day to visit them. In the morning you will start your day at Savica Waterfall, approximately 30 minutes drive from Bled. To get there you will pass the amazing Bohinj Lake that is definitely worth a stop. In the afternoon you can visit Vintgar Gorge only 10 minutes drive away from Bled. It takes less than an hour to make a round trip in the gorge and is easy to walk. From here you can continue to drive for about 40 minutes to Kranjska Gora where you will spend the night.

DAY 3: Kranjska Gora or Bovec

Kranjska Gora is an alpine resort in northwestern Slovenia. In the winter you can go skiing, during all the other seasons you can enjoy beautiful nature, most famous being Vrata Valley, Jasna Lake and Krma Valley. The alternative to Kranjska Gora would be Bovec, a small mountain town in the northwestern Slovenia. Bovec is a popular destination for adrenaline and water sports, so if you are into that you should probably go to Bovec. On your way to Bovec you can stop at the Soča River Source.

DAY 4: Tolmin Gorge, Soča Rive Valley and Piran

The Tolmin Gorge is the lowest and southernmost entry point into the Triglav National Park. It is an easy circular trail and it will take you around one and a half hour to walk it over. After this last pearl of the Triglav National Park you will continue your way to the seaside. On your way you can make a stop at any interesting landmark in Soča River Valley or even in Trieste. It is not a Slovenian city anymore but it is very connected with people and culture from Slovenian seaside. If you prefer there are many interesting landmarks in Slovenian west too. You will probably be quite tired when you arrive to Piran so you can enjoy a walk on the beach and have a delicious seafood dinner. In the evening you should go to Portorož, a touristy town known for its nightlife.

DAY 5: Piran and the seaside

Enjoy the seaside that is beautiful all year long. You can do some sightseeing in famous Piran, small fishing town Izola and a port town Koper. In the summer you can go swimming and you can visit Portorož, a seside resort town, near Piran. Spend the night in Piran.

DAY 6: Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle

Drive to Postojna where you will visit the famous Postojna Cave. Alternatively you can visit any other cave, but bear in mind for many caves you have to book the tour in advance. After the visit of the cave you should go to Predjama Castle, a castle from medieval times, carved into the high cliff. In the evening continue your way to Ljubljana where you spend the night.

DAY 7: Ljubljana

The time has come to visit Ljubljana, Slovenian capital and very popular destination for a city break. In Ljubljana you have so much to do and see. You can go sightseeing or do an interesting activity and you should definitely go to Slovenian restaurants.

DAY 8: Novo Mesto, Otočec and Terme Čatež

Its time to explore the eastern part of Slovenia. It takes around one hour to arrive to Novo mesto, the biggest city in the southeast of Slovenia. There you can make a quick stop and continue your way to nearby Otočec, a famous castle on the island in the Krka River. You can even spend a night in the castle, but even better possibility is to drive for another 30 minutes to thermal spa and waterpark Terme Čatež and enjoy the rest of the day there. This is the biggest thermal spa in Slovenia with many slides and playgrounds for kids. Alternatively, you can choose any other spa and spend a day and night there.

DAY 9: Maribor and Špičnik

After the breakfast you will continue your way to Maribor, the second biggest city in Slovenia. There is a lot of possibilities for the activities in and near Maribor. You should definitely take a walk in the old town Lent and visit the oldest wine in the world. Twenty minutes’ drive from Maribor is a small village Špičnik famous for its heart road in the middle in the vineyard. Spend the night in Maribor.

DAY 10: Ptuj and Ljubljana

On your way back to Ljubljana you have to make a stop in Ptuj, the oldest town in Slovenia. In Ptuj you can climb the castle, enjoy a walk in the old part of the town or visit the biggest underground cellar in Slovenia. When in Ljubljana you might want to get on a boat ride on Ljubljanica river, buy some souvenirs or (if you have to) head home.
